Humrahi sung by Shahana Shome is a song dedicated to Indian cycling. We chat with Dola about the concept and idea behind this inspiring number.
Humrahi by Shahana
In a refreshing blend of youthful talent and a powerful environmental message, a new song titled “Humrahi” is pedalling its way into our hearts. Produced by a Mumbai-based musician Dola, the song features the captivating voice of 17-year-old Shahana. With the lyricist Sougato, the trio are aiming to inspire a cycling revolution for a healthier planet and healthier lives.
The producer, a classically trained singer with a passion for music that extends beyond her corporate life, conceived the song’s concept. Her inspiration struck during a trip to the Netherlands, where she witnessed the widespread use of bicycles for everyday commuting and family outings. This stark contrast to the limited cycling infrastructure in India, coupled with growing concerns about urban pollution and the need for sustainable living, ignited the idea for Humrahi.
“We wanted to convey that cycling isn’t just for dedicated cyclists,” Dola explains. “It’s a simple, effective way for everyone, especially youngsters, to contribute to the environment and their own well-being.” She emphasizes the multifaceted benefits of cycling: it reduces stress, offers a unique pleasure, and serves as a sustainable alternative to motorized transport. “Instead of going to the gym, you can cycle,” she suggests.
The song’s core message is encapsulated in its poignant opening lines:
“Mere shehar ki hawa ko dawa chahiye,
Aaj dhuaan hai to saans kal saaf chahiye,
Zara kam karo gadi ki sawari
Dum ghut ti raahon ko Humrahi chahiye!”
This powerful imagery underscores the urgency of addressing urban environmental degradation.
The Singer
Shahana, the talented vocalist, brings this message to life. Despite her young age, she’s an experienced performer with a background in stage shows, jingles, and even social support through music, including fundraising for girl child initiatives. This song marks Shahana’s first original song, with every element, from composition to lyrics, being freshly created for this project.

The choice of Hindi for the song was deliberate, aiming for maximum impact within India. “Why not English? Because we are creating for India,” Dola states, though she remains open to making versions in other Indian languages with proper support.
She believes music is a potent tool for social change. “This song can be played at any cycling event,” she suggests, seeing it as a powerful message rather than just background music. She also recognizes the community’s desire for upbeat cycling-specific tracks for long rides, a potential future project.
The cycling community has embraced Humrahi enthusiastically, with positive comments pouring in on YouTube and Instagram. However, Dola emphasizes that the song’s ultimate goal is to inspire wider adoption of cycling. She advocates for better cycling infrastructure and safety measures, drawing parallels to the Netherlands’ success. “Until and unless we have the infrastructure, it is very difficult,” she notes, urging both individuals and the government to prioritize regular cycling for a healthier, greener India.
