Garmin Edge gear tracker introduces a smart component tracking feature, helping cyclists monitor gear lifespans.

The company has rolled out a major software update for its Edge cycling computers. This new feature allows riders to track the precise mileage of individual drivetrain components, tyres, and other bike parts.

      Preventing Costly Wear and Tear

Keeping on top of bike maintenance is crucial for cyclists. Neglecting your gear often leads to excessive wear, resulting in an expensive bill at the local bike shop. This update aims to eliminate the guesswork from bike upkeep.

Many bike components have a strictly limited lifespan. Chains, in particular, stretch over time and gradually destroy expensive cassettes and chainrings. While a chain checker is a cheap tool to prevent this, many riders simply do not own one. Garmin’s new feature acts as a digital alternative to keep your bike running smoothly.

How the Garmin Edge Gear Tracker Works

The update allows users to add specific components to individual bike profiles. For example, a road bike profile can now include a chain, cassette, and tyres. Alternatively, users can create a broader “drivetrain” category if they prefer a simpler setup.

      +-------------------------------------------------------------+
      | GARMIN EDGE LIFESPAN TRACKING |

Cyclists can input a custom maximum lifespan for each part. Every time a ride is recorded, the Edge computer automatically adds that distance to the component’s total. Subsequently, the device displays clear progress bars and triggers automated alerts when a part is nearing its theoretical end.

      No More Dead Batteries

In addition to tracking mechanical wear, this tool is highly useful for riders with electronic shifting. Many cyclists frequently forget to charge their groupset batteries, which often leaves them stranded mid-ride on a makeshift single-speed. However, this new tracking screen can serve as a handy reminder to charge up before heading out.

Availability: This feature is part of a wider software suite. Users can download it now via the Garmin Express desktop app or the Garmin Connect mobile app.
