If you think your weekend hill reps are tough, wait until you hear what a group of cyclists in Ladakh are tackling right now.
On June 11th, the Indian Army officially flagged off an epic, high-altitude cycling expedition to commemorate the 27th Kargil Vijay Diwas. The staggering 550-kilometer journey started at the historic Rezang La War Memorial in Chushul and is set to culminate at the Kargil War Memorial in Drass.
For the cycling community, this route is the ultimate test of human endurance, linking two of the most prominent military memorials in India’s history.

This isn’t your average bike ride. The route takes riders through some of the most brutal and demanding terrain on the planet. Participants are negotiating altitudes ranging from 9,000 to a breathless 18,000 feet above sea level.
To put that into perspective, the peloton will have to conquer some of Ladakh’s most legendary and punishing mountain passes, including:
Chang La
Fotu La
Hamboting La
With steep ascents that will make the quads scream, rapidly changing alpine weather, rugged mountain landscapes, and bone-chilling thin air, this expedition demands absolute resilience. It is the ultimate showcase of grit and perseverance on two wheels.
Unity on Two Wheels
What makes this expedition truly special is the peloton itself. The team is a unique mix of trained Army personnel and civilian cyclists from the Leh and Kargil districts. It’s a joint effort that highlights the deep bond between the military and the local Himalayan communities, all united by a shared passion for adventure and national pride.
“The expedition is intended not only as an endurance challenge but also as an outreach initiative,” an Army official stated.
As the riders pedal through remote villages, they are hosting engagement programs to interact with local youth, students, and ex-servicemen—spreading a message of patriotism and national integration.
Pedaling for a Cause
Beyond the massive physical challenge, the ride is a deeply symbolic tribute to the courage and sacrifice of the soldiers who laid down their lives for the nation. By starting at Rezang La (honoring the 1962 Indo-China War heroes) and finishing at Drass (dedicated to the 1999 Kargil conflict heroes), these cyclists are honoring a legacy of bravery with every pedal stroke.
The expedition is part of a broader series of events leading up to Kargil Vijay Diwas. From all of us in the cycling community, we wish the riders safe roads, strong legs, and tailwinds on those massive climbs!
