Cycling superstar Tadej Pogačar has achieved global recognition. Time magazine named the world champion one of the 100 most influential people in sport for 2026. This marks the first year Time has curated a list dedicated entirely to the sporting world.

The 27-year-old Slovenian was featured in the prestigious “Icons” section of the list. He stands alongside global sports stars like Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Carlos Alcaraz. Notably, Pogačar is the only cyclist to make the 2026 selection. Other categories in the special issue include “Titans”, “Innovators”, and “Leaders”.
Time praised Pogačar’s incredible versatility on two wheels. The magazine noted his ability to win across Grand Tours, one-day classics, and time trials. They highlighted his mastery of climbs, gravel, and cobbles alike.
A Historic Run of Success
Pogačar’s inclusion follows an extraordinary 12-month run. By 2025, he secured his fourth Tour de France title and his second world championship. He also captured four consecutive Monument victories.
“Suffering and cycling go hand in hand,” Pogačar previously stated, reflecting on the brutal nature of his sport. “It’s what unites the cycling fraternity.”
Historically, cycling has struggled to break into mainstream media. The last cyclist to impact Time’s influential lists was Lance Armstrong in 2008. However, Pogačar’s historic exploits are shifting global attention back to the sport. Earlier this year, his dominance also earned him a nomination for the Laureus World Sportsman of the Year Award.
Chasing History This Summer
The global honor arrives at a pivotal moment in the cyclist’s career. This summer, Pogačar has the chance to chase a historic fifth Tour de France title. Winning would place him in an elite club of just four other cycling legends. With Time’s latest recognition, his legacy as a mainstream sporting icon is already secure.
