DESENZANO DEL GARDA, ITALY — In a major milestone for Indian sports diplomacy, a high-level Indian delegation presented a resounding success report of the inaugural Bajaj Pune Grand Tour 2026 to the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) Management Committee during its three-day meeting in northern Italy from June 2 to 4.
Led by Pune District Collector Mr. Jitendra Dudi, the presentation highlighted how the historic event has firmly placed India on the global cycling map. Held from January 19 to 23, 2026, the race was the first-ever men’s multi-stage road race (Class 2.2) organized in India.

The five-day debut event achieved unprecedented public engagement, drawing 2.5 million spectators in total. 1.5 million fans lining the final “Pune Pride Loop” stage alone. To accommodate this world-class spectacle, local administration undertook a massive infrastructure overhaul, upgrading over 300 kilometers of roads to meet stringent international standards.
Spanning a grueling 437 kilometers across diverse terrains—from the tech hubs of Pimpri-Chinchwad to the steep climbs of the Western Ghats—the tour served a dual purpose. It acted as an elite athletic platform. And successfully showcased Pune’s scenic landscapes, rich historical heritage, and cultural legacy as an emerging international tourist destination.
Thrilling Sporting Action
On the tarmac, the event featured 164 elite riders from 28 professional and national teams representing 35 countries. All vying for critical ranking points ahead of the LA 2028 Summer Olympics.
New Zealander Luke Mudgway, racing for China’s Li Ning Star, utterly dominated the general classification. Capturing the coveted Leader’s Jersey early on, Mudgway secured the overall individual title. He finished with a cumulative time of 9 hours, 33 minutes, and 4 seconds. His squad also swept the team classification. Meanwhile, Harshveer Singh Sekhon, representing the Indian National Team, delivered a stellar performance and was the tour’s top domestic rider.
Powerhouse Backing and UCI Acclaim
The Indian delegation in Italy featured prominent sports and administrative leaders, including Abhinav Bindra. He is India’s first individual Olympic gold medallist and Independent Director on the Board of Bajaj Auto. His involvement underscored the escalating commitment of the private sector to Indian sports policy. The delegation was completed by Peter Griffiths (Strategic Adviser), alongside Cycling Federation of India (CFI) officials Mr. Onkar Singh and Mr. Maninder Pal Singh, who shared a unified vision of making cycling an accessible vehicle for grassroots and elite sporting development.
The presentation drew high praise from UCI President David Lappartient:
“The report on the Bajaj Pune Grand Tour… is extremely encouraging. Cycling continues to develop in new territories where it has the potential to become a leading sport. India is undoubtedly, alongside China, a country where our sport has a bright future.”
With strong administrative backing, corporate investment, and official validation from the UCI, the Bajaj Pune Grand Tour has laid a robust foundation for the future of professional cycling in South Asia.
